Background

Governor Murphy has authorized a bear hunt.  The hunt will occur October 13th-18th, 2025. This decision was deemed an emergency ruling by the Governor and the Division of Fish and Wildlife. On November 15th, at the Fish and Game Council Meeting the council, comprised of over half hunters voted unanimously in favor of reinstating the hunt despite the overwhelming majority of the public comments in opposition.

Why Advocate

The Fish and Game Council is entrusted with the conservation of our wildlife––yet six of its eleven members come from The Sportsmen’s Club, a private organization whose mission is to promote hunting. This is an imbalance in a vital legislative decision-making body, which must be rectified to end bear hunting. Within the 2023 and 2024 hunting seasons, almost 1000 Black Bears were killed and displayed as mere trophy winnings.

It is necessary for our state to provide representation from wildlife protection organizations on the Fish & Game Council. This equitable composition will ensure that future humane, science-based approaches are provided to help guide all wildlife management policy in the Garden State. It is possible to co-exist peacefully with our native wildlife with the introduction of bear-smart policies instead of killings.

Sign The Petition

Governor Murphy made a promise during his campaign, that if elected he would place a moratorium on the hunt. Please sign our petition to let Governor Murphy know we are holding him to his word. The bears need you.
